Day Ypres Salient and the Last Post
Of all the Great War battlefields, Ypres Salient is perhaps the most emotive, for nearly 50,000 men lost their lives. We will also visit the nearby Tyne Cot Cemetery, the memorial to the missing and the In Flanders Field Museum, before returning to Ypres to experience the evocative last Post ceremony (lunch is provided instead of dinner on this day to allow for the ceremony). Full
Day The Somme
On 1st July 1916 British and French troops advanced from their trenches in the Somme to begin one of the bloodiest days in military history, resulting in 50,000 men falling, 20,000 of who were killed. We visit Vimy Ridge, the highest point of a 9-mile ridge where a battle took place in 1917 for possession of the site, before heading to Thiepval, a village successfully captured by British troops in 1916, and Beaumont Hamel, where there is a beautiful memorial.
