Day: Aries & the Camargue
The city of Arles is the gateway to the untamed land of the Camargue, land of gypsies. On the banks of the Rhône, Arles was once a metropolis of Roman Gaul and then became a symbol of ardent Christianity, all of which can be seen through the impressive arena where bullfights are still held. The Camargue, western Europe’s largest river delta, is an area of natural beauty, where the long roads cross marshes, farmland and grain fields all teaming with wildlife. Full
Day: Avignon, Pont du Gard & Uzes
Today we visit the fortified city of Avignon, full of history and the magnificent 14th century Palace of the Popes. We then drive to the Pont du Gard, which literally means ‘bridge of the Gard’, a majestic aqueduct built by the Romans around the 1st century AD to carry water to nearby Nîmes. We complete the day with a visit to pretty Uzes. Half
