DAY 3: Arrive at our hotel in the Rome area for a four-night stay. B,D |
|
DAY
4: Anzio and Nettuno (included) Anzio was chosen by the Allies to ease the pressure on the battles for Montecassino and this battle would last for many months, prior to the breakout and advance on Rome. We visit the Beach Head War Cemetery as well as the Anzio War Cemetery (both Commonwealth Cemeteries). We then visit the American War Cemetery at Anzio/Nettuno and stop at the local war museum to remember the victims of the battles for Anzio. B,D |
|
DAY
5: Cassino and Montecassino (included) We head to Montecassino, site of the four battles to ‘take the important road to Rome’, by breaking through the strong German defences of the Gustav Line. We visit the famous Abbey, built and destroyed on four occasions. The last time was in 1944 when controversially it was bombed by the Allies. Next, we visit the Polish War Cemetery prior to visiting the town itself and the biggest Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in southern Italy. B,D |
|
DAY
6: Rome (included) A day’s break from the battlefields. Enjoy a day in the Eternal City. To get the most from your visit, join our optional guided sightseeing tour both by coach and on foot, visiting the principal sights of the city. Climb the famous Spanish Steps and ensure a return visit to Rome by tossing a coin in the Trevi Fountain! A visit to the mighty Colosseum for a guided tour of Rome’s greatest amphitheatre will be the highlight of the tour. B,D |

DAY
8: Berchtesgaden and Eagle's Nest* (included) En route to Bad Aibling in Bavaria for a two-night stay, we visit Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s power base, and the Eagle’s Nest, his alpine hideaway. The Eagle’s Nest was presented to the fascist dictator as a gift on his 50th birthday. Since then, the idyllic setting and remarkable architecture have been overshadowed by its close connection with the Third Reich, Hitler’s tyrannical image still hanging over it today. B * Please Note: on April 27 departure the Eagle’s Nest may not be open. If this is the case time will be spent at the Eagles Nest Museum and in the town of Berchtesgaden. |
|
DAY
9: Munich and Dachau (included) We follow the route taken by Hitler and his associates in the ill-fated ‘Munich Putsch’ of November 1923. Visit the Ludwigsbrücke, then Marienplatz and the Feldernhalle where the attempted coup came to a dramatic climax. Later, we pay a remembrance visit to the Concentration Camp at Dachau. B |
|
DAY
10: To Nuremberg area (included) for an overnight stay. Visiting Nuremberg is a fascinating opportunity to study the rise of National Socialism and see the sites chosen by Hitler for his famous rallies, including the remains of the main rally site at the Zeppelinwiese. Visit the remains of the Congress Hall, Victory Avenue and the Luitpoldhain – all part of his vision of a National Socialist Germania. We also visit the famous Nuremberg Court Room (subject to modern day court proceedings not taking place) where many Nazis including Goering and Hess, were tried in front of a world audience – the fall of National Socialism. B |
