| A Taste of Welsh Life - Your Excursions |
FULL DAY Spend the morning at St Fagans, a 100 acre parkland at the edge of Cardiff, where re-erected buildings from all over Wales can be explored, including miners’ cottages, farmhouses, a working bakery, blacksmith, and Victorian shop, in a vast open-air museum. Into the Vale of Glamorgan in the afternoon for a guided tour and winetasting at Llanerch Vineyard, where grapes are grown for the award winning Cariad wines. |
FULL DAY We include a tour of Castell Coch (the Red Castle) this morning, only five minutes drive from our hotel. It is a fairytale fantasy, a late 19th century creation for the wealthy Marquis of Bute, looking medieval outside, but with an extravagant Victorian interior. From here, at the entrance to the Taff Gorge, we tour the South Wales Valleys past Aberfan, Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare and by a wild moorland road to descend to the Rhondda Valley and the Rhondda Heritage Park at Trehafod, for an included opportunity to take a cage ride to 'Pit Bottom' and explore the underground workings of a 1950’s colliery, guided by former miners. There is also a museum depicting the living conditions in the Rhondda Valley in years gone by. |
FULL DAY An excursion to Cardiff Bay to see Mermaid Quay, the Wales Millennium Centre, and the Norwegian Church where Roald Dahl was baptised. At the nearby seaside suburb of Penarth, there are views of the Somerset and Exmoor hills across the Bristol Channel, if the weather is fine!. |
