DAY A grand tour of the Northern Dales takes us first to Richmond, where a magnificent castle towers above the River Swale, fronted by a huge cobbled market place. On through Wensleydale to Hawes, then beside the Settle & Carlisle Railway, past the old market town of Kirkby Stephen, to Teesdale and Barnard Castle, where the ruined castle dates from the 11th century. |
FULL DAY In the morning to Whitby, where a ruined clifftop abbey overlooks the picturesque town, huddled around the colourful harbour. Chance to visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, with memorabilia about his voyages from Whitby, before climbing into the North York Moors National Park to Goathland, the ‘Heartbeat’ village. From here we ride on the preserved North York Moors Railway to Pickering (ticket included). |
