Real West Riding - England Coach Tours - 5 Days Tour Highlights • ‘Summer Wine Magic’ guided tour • National Coalmining Museum for England • Ride on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway • Caphouse Colliery underground visit • Ladybower, the 'Dambusters reservoir |
The old West Riding of Yorkshire is a region with a unique character, better known these days
as the setting of several TV series and films, such as 'Last of the Summer Wine' and 'The
Railway Children', the locations of which we will show you, including a nostalgic train journey.
Add a visit to a former colliery, now a museum, with chance to go underground, a moorland
drive to the Derwent Valley reservoirs, and you have an interest-packed short break with
something for everyone. |
| The Real West Riding - Your Excursions |
FULL
DAY In the morning to nearby Holmfirth, where we include a ‘Summer Wine Magic’ tour (ticket included), with a local guide, who will show you the TV location on a small mini-coach capable of negotiating the nooks and crannies, lanes and alleyways, that feature in the programme. This afternoon we continue by the wild Snake Pass to view Ladybower Reservoir, where the Dambusters practised before their raid on Germany. |
FULL DAY Travel into the old Yorkshire coalmining area for a visit to Caphouse Colliery (admission included), which has been transformed to become the National Coalmining Museum for England. Guided by former miners, the highlight is a descent in the ‘cage’ to the underground passages and coal seam, suitably attired with a helmet and head torch. Surface attractions include the pit pony stables, pit head baths, audio visual displays, exhibits about the mining industry and a lovely nature trail. Our day continues as we travel through Calderdale and across the moors to reach Oxenhope, terminus of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, one of our favourite preserved lines. There’s a chance for a look inside the small museum before boarding a train for the old fashioned ride to Keighley (ticket included). |
