MONDAY
Across the Scottish border and through the Highlands to Inverness, then by the coast road north to Thurso and the Royal Hotel for one night.
TUESDAY
This morning we take the opportunity to visit famous John O’Groats before heading to Scrabster for the lunchtime ferry to Stromness, Orkney’s second largest town. Here we take an island tour which includes the 5000 years old Stone Age village of Skara Brae (admission not included), the Churchill Barriers of Scapa Flow, and the colourful Italian Chapel, built in a Nissen hut by prisoners of war in World War II.We reach Kirkwall, the small capital, dominated by St. Magnus Cathedral, for sightseeing and an evening meal before boarding the overnight ferry to Shetland. Accommodation is in a cabin with washbasin, shower and toilet, and the ship has a bar, lounge areas, two restaurants and a shop.
WEDNESDAY
Arrive at Lerwick, capital of Shetland, with breakfast on board before an island tour which includes the Bronze Age settlement of Jarlshof and nearby Sumburgh Head, the haunt of thousands of seabirds. The afternoon is free at Lerwick, with its old harbour, once the largest herring port in northern Europe. Re-board our ship for dinner and an overnight sailing to Aberdeen.
