SUNDAY From local departure points travel to the north of England for an overnight stop. |
MONDAY Across the Scottish border and through the Highlands to Inverness, then by the coast road north to Thurso and the Royal Hotel for one night. |
TUESDAY This morning we take the opportunity to visit famous John O’Groats before heading to Scrabster for the lunchtime ferry to Stromness, Orkney’s second largest town. Here we take an island tour which includes the 5000 years old Stone Age village of Skara Brae (admission not included), the Churchill Barriers of Scapa Flow, and the colourful Italian Chapel, built in a Nissen hut by prisoners of war in World War II.We reach Kirkwall, the small capital, dominated by St. Magnus Cathedral, for sightseeing and an evening meal before boarding the overnight ferry to Shetland. Accommodation is in a cabin with washbasin, shower and toilet, and the ship has a bar, lounge areas, two restaurants and a shop. |
WEDNESDAY Arrive at Lerwick, capital of Shetland, with breakfast on board before an island tour which includes the Bronze Age settlement of Jarlshof and nearby Sumburgh Head, the haunt of thousands of seabirds. The afternoon is free at Lerwick, with its old harbour, once the largest herring port in northern Europe. Re-board our ship for dinner and an overnight sailing to Aberdeen. |
THURSDAY Arrive at Aberdeen, with breakfast on board before a free morning at the dignified ‘Granite City’, with its fine buildings, shops and beach. In the afternoon we explore Royal Deeside, with a glimpse of Balmoral, a favourite retreat of the Royal family, and a stop at the tourist centre of Braemar before arriving at our hotel for the next two nights, the Huntley Arms Hotel, Aboyne. |
FRIDAY An excursion from Deeside across the wild Cairngorm Mountains to descend to the Spey Valley ‘Whisky Country’, with time for sightseeing at the elegant Georgian town of Grantown-on- Spey. |
SATURDAY We begin our journey home, returning to the north of England for an overnight stop. |
SUNDAY Travel homeward as our tour draws to a close. |
