In the heart of the Peak District National Park, in the midst of pastoral limestone scenery, with
picturesque stonebuilt villages and imposing stately homes, lies our holiday base, deep in the
gorge of the River Derwent. Matlock Bath attracts large numbers of visitors, and boasts lovely
riverside walks, superb Pavilion gardens, seaside-style shops, small scale amusements and a
spectacular cable car ride to the lofty Heights of Abraham, 1,000 feet above the Derwent Valley. |

FULL
DAY A scenic day touring the limestone White Peak area of the Peak District, with its deep dales, underground caverns and fields edged with drystone walls. Through the green parkland estate of Chatsworth House, with views of the great stately home, we reach the beautiful Hope Valley and the favourite tourist centre of Castleton, overlooked by Mam Tor, the ‘shivering mountain’. Beneath a ruined hilltop castle, the village has a succession of enticing little shops, cafes and pubs, and is surrounded by underground ‘showcaves’, where semi-precious Blue John stone is mined, a popular souvenir. On our return we have a stop at the small town of Bakewell, another popular tourist centre, where Bakewell Pudding is sold in the local bakeries. |
FULL DAY Through the old market town of Ashbourne to Dovedale and the picturesque stone built village of Hartington, then on in the afternoon to the spa town of Buxton, with its gracious 18th century crescents and terraces, before returning across the bleak moors of the Roaches. |
